Photoshop Guidelines  |  Scan Guidelines

We are always willing to accommodate you! However, for quick service and to avoid delay, the following guidelines have been provided for art submission.

Britten's preferred software application is Adobe Illustrator as it prints at the highest quality. If this format is not an option, send us whatever you have and our competent art staff will create the highest quality files possible. The process begins with you providing us the best picture of your logo, ideas, etc. If all you have is a sketch and a bumper sticker with your logo, that's fine. Send us whatever you have! If you can send a digital file, that's wonderful! Britten can work with almost any file format.

Our art department contains state-of-the-art hardware and software to supply all your graphic needs. Our Design Studio can provide you with everything from basic banner design to complete corporate identity materials. We can help you from concept to creation! Each order includes one free hour of art time. An in-house designer will develop your design and send you a proof for your review and approval!

Illustrator

  • All fonts must be converted to paths. If possible, fonts should be included also.
  • Images containing vector art only will automatically print at highest resolution.
  • Print quality for images containing imported files and vector art/copy will vary. Any imported images will print at resolution assigned in Photoshop (see recommended scanning resolution formula below) and any vector art/copy will print at highest resolution.
  • PMS numbers must be assigned to all art and copy. CMYK will not print consistently on different materials.

Quark / InDesign Format

Quark and InDesign files will require a print-out or fax from the customer. Quark documents will require an extra art charge.

Scanning Formula

The following is a formula for calculating required DPI for scanning purposes. Keep in mind that Britten requests a DPI of 72 at full size. Lower resolution images will result in less than desirable output.

Final Print Height of Image Scan = X (Scan Resolution) Required Resolution (72)

For example if the finished size of the banner is 36 inches and the artwork will be scanned at a height of 3 inches, the formula will work as follows:

36 @ 72 = 3 @ X (X being required dpi at 3")

Therefore: 36/3 = X/72
12 = X/72
12 * 72 = X
864 = X
So the DPI to scan at would be 864.

If the image is created 1" = 1' resolution must be 12 times higher than requirements of 72 dpi full size, hence 864 dpi.

  • Files can be saved as either an EPS or Tif file. Sending a copy of the layered Photoshop file of complex images is also an excellent idea.
  • To achieve the highest print quality, set any copy that overlays a Photoshop Image in Illustrator and convert the copy to paths. Save the converted copy as an Illustrator file and include on disk.
  • PMS numbers must be assigned to all copy.

ALL DISKS SHOULD BE ACCOMPANIED BY A COLOR HARD COPY OF THE ART! ALL ELECTRONIC FILES SHOULD BE ACCOMPANIED BY A COMPOSITE .JPG.

Accepted File Formats: Illustrator CS2 or below, or Photoshop CS2 or below (note: DO NOT flatten Photoshop files).

Accepted Disks: Zip, CD-ROM, and DVD.
